Choose the correct mode
| Feature | Guest mode | Registered account |
|---|---|---|
| Storage location | This browser only | CloseBook account database plus a browser copy |
| Device changes | Data does not follow you | Supported book data synchronizes after sign-in |
| Current capacity | 1 local book | 5 active books + 50 closed books |
| Email required | No | Yes, with verification |
| Password recovery | Not applicable | Reset code sent by email |
| Risk when browser data is cleared | Guest books may be permanently erased | Synced books can be restored by signing in, subject to service availability |
| Independent backup needed | Yes | Yes |
| Invoice or receipt files stored | No | No |
Guest mode is suitable when
- You are testing CloseBook with noncritical data.
- You need a temporary single book on one device.
- You will export a backup before clearing or changing the browser.
A registered account is suitable when
- The book must be available on more than one device.
- You expect to maintain several active and closed books.
- You need email-based password recovery.
Registration reduces the risk of browser-only loss, but synchronization is not a replacement for an independent backup.
